Apply journalism techniques. The key to good content marketing is creating valuable, shareable content. Journalists are masters of storytelling, and a big part of what makes them so successful is the style in which they write. Using the inverted pyramid structure (sharing the most interesting and important information at the start and saving less significant details for later) ensures you get straight to the point, which is of utmost importance when it comes to writing for the Web.

Consider native advertising. Advertising is less disruptive when it’s presented in the same format as content audiences are already seeking out. If you’re looking for new ways to promote your brand, consider native advertising (i.e., sponsored stories and in-feed promotions). Business Insider reports that native advertisements perform better than traditional display ads, and that consumers also prefer it.

Use social media. We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: Your brand needs to be active on social media. In 2015, publishing and social media began to intersect. Twitter rolled out a retweet feature allowing users to add lengthy comments back in April. There’s also talk of Twitter completely doing away with its 140-character limit, which would make social media content marketing easier than ever.

It’s a new year! We have been keeping our eye on some trends in the industry and wanted to share them with you to get your marketing campaigns started on the right foot. Bring it on, 2014!

1.) Location, Location, Location. Back in November, we discussed the significance of mobile marketing and explored the importance of having a presence on mobile devices.

Here we are in January, and the impact of mobile usage will only continue to increase. 91% of adults have a cell phone within arm’s reach at all times. More importantly, the prevalence of location-based digital marketing will drive purchase decisions and consumer behavior. To keep current in this changing world, have a mobile strategy in place.



2.) Social Media Pay to Play. The big guys (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) are now public companies and need to make $$$$. That’s where advertising comes in. The organic reach on social media is no longer what it was years, or even months, ago. Facebook recently changed its algorithm on how posts are delivered, making it difficult for brand pages to have their content reach fans. Ad dollars are now driving the content distribution, and marketers should be aware of the change.



3.) Content Marketing is hot right now and for good reason, people want value. Customers crave new, improved ways to increase their productivity and grow their business. Offer e-books, how-to’s, infographics, and helpful guides in a variety of formats, such as videos, downloads, and white papers. Blogging continues to be the undisputed champion in the ring of content marketing while social media platforms are the sparring partners who help it build through the ranks. Without quality content, no one will listen. Why should they? It’s a crowded field of people competing for the attention of the audience. 4.) Visuals, Visuals, Visuals. If you haven’t noticed this trend by now, you may be living under a rock or simply are not online enough. Brilliant, artfully curated images are the way to communicate now. Image-based platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and We Heart It are kicking butt. Even Twitter now has placed photos front and center in its feed. You cannot underestimate the importance of high quality, captivating images in all of your work. Remember it takes less time to view an image than it does to read a headline, so always include eye-popping images with your content.
